How We Can Help
Our Mission: To provide battered and homeless women with children free bedding, basic living essentials, and assistance for moving expenses once they receive private housing from referring agencies.
Our Vision: To keep women and children safe and to show them that there is a better life after abuse or homelessness; to ensure that no mother and child will have to sleep on the floor or on the ground unprotected, and that they won’t become separated throughout difficult times.
Fact: “Approximately 1.3 million women are physically assaulted on an annual basis in the United States by an intimate partner.” Source: Patricia Tjaden & Nancy Thoennes, U.S. Department of Justice, NCJ 183781, Full Report of the Prevalence, Incidence, and Consequences of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women: Findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey, at iv (2000), available at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/nij/pubs-sum/183781.htm.
As an outreach program, our goal is to give hope back to victims of domestic abuse; hope about life after abuse and to provide homeless women a safe and warm environment for themselves and their children. Abused women making the transition of moving from a shelter into their own home can be a difficult time. Even though they’re in a safer environment, some of them may contemplate returning to an abusive household because their new accommodations seem so sparse. But moving into a place that feels like a real home that is filled with furniture and colorful decorations will give them a deeper sense of security. It gives them the security to believe in new beginnings and to realize they can live a life without abuse and without having to live on the streets.
We solicit and pick up new and gently used furniture, appliances, and useable household items from various counties in the Metro Atlanta area. (We don’t accept pieces that are stained, damaged or covered in pet hair or odors.) Some of the newer furnishings are stored at our facility for distribution. Items that are not donated will be sold at our auction to cover the majority of our operation’s costs.
All clients must be referred by a local approved shelter and/or member agency. Their caseworkers are more familiar with their clients’ specific needs. Nu Life Outreach provides assistance to the client through appointment only. We are not open to the public.
Nu Life Outreach is a Non-Profit corporation, and is tax exempt under IRS 501 (C) (3). Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.
